    The Pants Guide

A good pair of pants should look right, feel comfortable and fit just as you’d expect. But what do all those pleats, leg lengths, rises and expanding waistbands actually mean? And which cut is right for you? Our Pants Guide answers the questions we’re asked most often, with a little help on the details that can make all the difference.

    MT48-Bronze-Leg-Sub.jpg

    Length availability

You may have noticed that some of our pants come in odd-numbered leg lengths, while others are available in even numbers. There’s a reason for that.

As a general rule, our more traditional pleated pants are offered in odd-numbered lengths, while our contemporary flat-front pants and jeans tend to come in even-numbered lengths.

It’s not a hard-and-fast rule, but it should help explain why your favorite pair might be available in one set of lengths rather than the other.

    MT22-Green-French-Bearer-Sub.jpg

What on earth is a “French bearer”?

A French bearer is a small hidden tab and button inside the waistband of your pants, positioned just behind the main fly fastening. It’s a wonderfully simple piece of tailoring that does a surprisingly useful job.

Why go to all this trouble?

    • It takes the strain. The bearer shares the tension across the waistband, rather than leaving the main button or hook-and-bar fastening to do all the work.
    • It keeps things neat. By holding the waistband securely at the front, it helps prevent the fly from gaping, bulging or puckering, giving you a cleaner line.
    • It gives extra security. Think of it as a discreet second line of defense, helping to keep everything securely in place.

You’ll find a French bearer on selected Peter Christian pants – one of those little details you will appreciate once you know it’s there.

    Pants alterations and tailoring

Getting the length right can make all the difference to how a pair of pants looks and feels.

If you need a length outside our standard range, we can have your pants altered especially for you. Our tailoring charge covers our tailor’s time to finish each pair to your required length, so they arrive ready to wear – no need to find a local tailor and arrange the alterations yourself.

If your required length isn’t readily available at our warehouse, just give our Customer Services team a call and they’ll be happy to help. And if you prefer suspenders, we can add suspender buttons to selected pants. Neatly fitted inside the waistband, they provide a secure fixing for traditional button-on suspenders while keeping the outside of the pants looking just as it should.

For more information, see our Tailoring Services Page.

    What is an expanding waistband?

Our expanding waistband is a wonderfully simple bit of clever design, giving you a little extra room when you need it without changing the smart appearance of your pants.

Flexible sections are discreetly built into the waistband, allowing it to expand by a few inches when required, then return to its usual size. Everything is neatly concealed, so from the outside it looks just like a conventional waistband – only rather more accommodating. Particularly useful after a good lunch.

    Pleated-Flat-Front-Chino-Sub.jpg

    Pleated vs flat-front pants

Pleated pants have one or two folds of fabric at the front of the waistband. The pleats give you a little more room when you sit or move, while also creating a fuller, more relaxed drape through the leg. They’re a traditional choice and particularly well suited to a classic look.

Flat-front pants have no pleats, giving them a cleaner, more contemporary appearance. The fabric sits closer to the body, creating a neater, more streamlined silhouette.

Neither is right or wrong – it really comes down to the look and feel you prefer.

    MT20-High-Rise-Sub.jpg

    The Peter Christian fit

Our pants are cut in a traditional straight-leg fit with a higher rise. The rise is simply the distance from the crotch to the waistband. A higher rise sits naturally at the waist and can mean you need a slightly shorter leg than you might normally choose.

So, if you’re caught between two leg lengths, we’d generally suggest going for the shorter one. It’s surprising how much difference getting the rise and leg length right can make.

You’ll find the specific measurements for each pair on the individual pants page, to help you choose the right size.

For more information on pants measurements, see our Size Guide Information Page.

    Our Slim Fit

By popular request, we’ve recently introduced the Peter Christian Slim Fit, a narrower, tapered take on our classic pants, giving you a neater, more contemporary silhouette. We’ve kept our much-loved expanding waistband, so you get the same welcome extra bit of comfort in a more modern cut.

Our Slim Fit is currently available in selected flat-front chinos and corduroys. See our Slim Fit Pants Page to view all options.

    And our jeans?

Our jeans follow the classic five-pocket Western jean style, with a straightforward cut that’s easy to wear. That fifth pocket you ask? The little one tucked inside the front pocket was originally designed for a pocket watch – although these days it’s more likely to be keeping hold of a stray coin or two.

And jeans don’t have to mean denim. Alongside classic blue denim, you’ll find the same familiar five-pocket style in a range of fabrics, including soft moleskin, needle cord and sturdy cotton drill, as well as our colorful [Jeano range](/mens-trousers/chinos/mens-jeanos/). So, whether you prefer traditional denim or something a little different, you can enjoy the easy-going style of a jean in a fabric that suits you.
