BEHIND THE SCENES WITH HENRY BLOFELD
enry Blofeld OBE: recently retired sports journalist, broadcaster and Peter Christian fan is lending his unmistakable voice and uncompromising style to our new series of sartorial advice films “Ask Blowers”. In-between takes we took the opportunity to ask Henry a few questions.
The dress code at Lord's is quite strict. Is it still jackets and ties?
You have to, my dear old thing! Maybe they would let me get away with not wearing a tie if, instead I wore a cravat or bow tie – but I believe dress codes are appropriate, you wouldn’t want me turning up to your funeral in a Nike t-shirt would you! It adds to the sense of occasion, and sometimes it’s the right thing to do. Although I find myself wearing ties less and less nowadays, I think there are occasions when one must play by the rules. But I suppose even some members of the House of Commons aren’t wearing ties nowadays.
My taste for colour has only really come about in the last 10 years...

Who’s the best dressed sportsman you’ve met?
Sportsmen aren’t, as a rule very well turned out, I’m sure there are a few exceptions, but I mean, people seem to think sportswear is well dressed nowadays. Wayne Rooney is considered welldressed by some people, so I suppose I am not in a position to pass judgement on modern sportsmen any more. If I was to pick a figure who I would hold up as well dressed, it would be John Bly from Antiques Roadshow, he is always immaculately turned out, and a good friend too!
You are famous for your flamboyant and colourful style. Do you dress to please others, or yourself?
Well I have always taken an interest in clothes, but my taste for colour has only really come about in the last 10 years or so, since I met my wife Valeria, she has a real flair for colour. Since then I have been buying all sorts of things – knitwear, shoes and shirts in all sorts of exciting colours. It has become something I’m known for. The producer at TMS takes photos of my outfits and puts them on Twitter. I suppose some people are talking behind my back about what I’m wearing, but I really don’t care. I enjoy wearing colours, I don’t do it for anyone else.
Finally Henry, could you give us your top three favourite summer garments?
My turquoise shorts, my linen jacket and of course my trusty panama hat!
